This recipe makes a great desert to go along with your AviGlatt meal!

Recipe Ingredients:

  • 2 green apples, cored (peeling is optional) and cut into small chunks
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. chopped walnuts or pecans
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup golden raisins (optional)
  • Zest of one lemon
  • 1/2 cup margarine melted
  • Powered sugar

Chunky Maple Apple Sauce (optional)

  • 2 Cups chunky applesauce
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup
  • 1/3 cup golden raisins
  • 1 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon

Serves 8-12

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Line a large cookie sheet with greased parchment paper for easy cleanup.  Combine apples with granulated sugar, nuts cinnamon, raisins if using, and lemon zest.  Place one sheet of phyllo on work surface and brush with some of the melted margarine.  Top with a second sheet and brush again with margarine.

Place half of the apple-nut mixture at the long end of the sheets, leaving about a 1-inch border on the sides.  Carefully roll up, tucking in the ends as you go, ending with seam down.  Brush top with margarine and place on a large cookie sheet lined with greased parchment paper for easy cleanup.  Repeat with remaining two phyllo sheets.  Bake for 35 minutes, until golden.  Cut each strip into 4-6 pieces.

To prepare optional sauce, simmer ingredients over medium heat for 2-3 minutes, stirring frequently.  Remove for heat.

Just before serving, sprinkle each slice with sifted powered sugar and a dollop of sauce, if suing.  Best served warm.
