Kosher Pasta

Posted By: AVI GLATT   On: 09/23/2014   Under:  All About Kosher
Pasta is a main meal for many people across the world, and it has always been popular in the USA. However, for Jewish people, pasta presents a particular set of problems, partly to do with the nature of its preparation, and partly to do with the fact that there are certain times of year when grain products can't be made, particularly Passover, and this can complicate pasta preparation, cooking and use. However, if you are a fan of Italian food, it is possible to find kosher pasta online. Understanding what makes pasta non-kosher normally can help you to find the perfect pasta for your Jewish holiday feast.

How to find kosher pasta

Pasta is a main meal for many people across the world, and it has always been popular in the USA. However, for Jewish people, pasta presents a particular set of problems, partly to do with the nature of its preparation, and partly to do with the fact that there are certain times of year when grain products can't be made, particularly Passover, and this can complicate pasta preparation, cooking and use. However, if you are a fan of Italian food, it is possible to find kosher pasta online. Understanding what makes pasta non-kosher normally can help you to find the perfect pasta for your Jewish holiday feast.

The main problems with pasta

There are two main problems with pasta which means that it might not pass the kosher laws of the Jewish faith. Firstly, most pasta is made using dairy products, including milk or butter, and it may also be made using stabilisers such as gelatine which would rule it out completely for use by a kosher family. There is a secondary problem with the pasta itself, which is that the makers may not prepare it using equipment only for kosher use. This can mean that the equipment is tainted with non-kosher foods, which then causes all of the food prepared afterwards to be tainted too. With dry pasta, the problem of requiring a Jewish person to participate in the cooking is removed, but fresh pasta, or pasta salads where no cooking is needed, are also not kosher.

Other problems which can make pasta not suitable for use by Jewish people is colouring used to create different kinds of pasta. This is sometimes made from forbidden foods such as squid ink, which make the pasta non-kosher.

Finding good kosher pasta

These restrictions mean that it can be quite hard to find kosher pasta through local stores. If you don't have a nearby supplier of kosher foods, and are not able to make your own pasta, then the best alternative is to seek out an online supplier. These suppliers have a number of contacts across the US, and also in other countries, who are able to certify that all of their foods are made according to kosher principles. By being able to reach out around the world like this, kosher suppliers can bring products together under one roof, making it easy for buyers to find.

Ordering online

How much pasta you order can depend upon whether you are a big pasta eater, or if you just want something to try for a change. Pasta can be sold in a single sheaf, or it can come in boxes, so you need to know what you want before you start ordering. It makes sense to try out the pasta before you buy a large amount in order to be sure that it is suitable for you.
